Fine Greek Owl Cup – SOLD

$2,900.00

Description:  Greek red-figure owl skyphos with both sides showing an owl in three-quarters profile, each with large circular eyes with central dots, a small ‘v” for the beak, the folded wing with diagonal striations for the feathers.  The body and head highlighted with stokes.  An olive branch flanks both sides of each owl.  A reserve ground line circles the bottom of the cup.  Two horizontal handles.  From the Apulia region of Southern Italy.

Height:  3 in (7.6 cm)

Condition:  Intact and very fine for the type.

Provenance:  Formerly in an Austrian private collection where it was acquired in 1968 in Vienna.

Reference:  Owl Skyphoi were extremely popular in ancient Greece and Magna Graecia, and remain equally prized today with collectors.  Fine examples embody many of the great characteristics of Greek pottery — elegant shape, fine red-figure decoration, and important iconography with the owl representing the might and brilliance of Athens — at a fraction of the price of a larger Attic or South Italian vessel.
