Circa Third Millennium BC
Bronze Age eye idol carved on flat, creamy white alabaster stone. The figure has a squat rectangular body with sloped shoulders, short thick neck and cone-shaped head. The face is incised with typical large round eyes, deep pupils and high arched conjoined eyebrows. Comes with a professionally built custom wooden base for display. A very affordable example of the type.
Height: 1.6 in. (4 cm)
Condition: Repaired at the neck. Thin layer of pinkish-beige encrustation.
Provenance: Formerly in an East Coast private collection.
Reference: These votive idols were buried in large quantities, generally broken to prevent “re-use,” at ancient “Eye Temples.”
